The ASK Formula

Wetlab Ltd was formed in 2002 to assist in surgical training through hands on training at the time it was heavily focused on cardiac surgery since that time it has developed to cover many aspects of medical training.

We all know the phrase “Practice makes perfect” which is generally thought true however in order to assist with another adage “If you can’t measure it you can’t manage it”.

Wetlab recommend the use of the ASK formula this stands for Activity, Skills and Knowledge.

Scoring each aspect of ASK from 1-4 for example:

A very junior student with no activity, no skill and a little knowledge would score: 1x1x1 =1

At the other end of the spectrum a very senior delegate would score 4 for activity 4 for skill and 4 for knowledge this equates to: 4x4x4= 64

It’s simple to see from this formula that the only way the junior can raise their rating is to increase the activity which wetlabs facilitate in safe patient free environment.
This in turn helps to develops the delegates skills. Equally interesting is the realisation that a senior physician rated 64 on the ASK formula if they let activity drop this reflects in a 3x4x4=48.

How do you think you score at the moment? And what is your strategy for development and maintenance of this part of your career?
